Backpacking Time! Warm Weather is a Time to Get Out in the Boonies!

If you have been watching the CBS TV series/reality show called the "Amazing Race", you see folks with backpacks running through the amazing places of the world. That's one way of using a backpack. Many folks use the backpack method to travel and explore around the world.

But on the other hand, you can use your backpack to explore the boonies, the wilderness, the great outdoors.

I created a Squidoo lens about "Backpacking - Like Hiking, but Bringing More Stuff With You" so you can see some of my experiences with this interesting way to get around.

Up In The Air? A Fascination with Aircraft!

A fascination with airplanes and other flying craft can start early - very early, in fact. So I cooked up a Squidoo lens that celebrates this fascination with links to resources. Of course, I named it Up In The Air --(really, named it something else... but the URL has "upintheair" in it).

As the picture above shows, enjoying the fun of flying can start at a very early age!

Then, you have the older, slower planes such as the one below.

And, you have the faster ones such as more recent types--as shown below.

Pacific Grove, California

At the beginning of this year, my wife and I enjoyed a two-day stay at a Bed & Breakfast Inn in Pacific Grove, California. In addition to having a wonderful break from the rush-and-hustle of day-to-day life, I had a chance to enjoy "away-time" with my wife and to take bunches of pictures of the beautiful scenery that abounds in Pacific Grove. And, of course, I came up with some goodies for my Squidoo lens on this amazing little community.

Where Did the Sea Lions Go?

They used to be a popular scene in San Francisco... hundreds of sea lions camping out on the platforms at Pier 39. But near the middle of November, all the sea lions disappeared. This Squidoo lens on sea lions gives you a few images of when the place was literally crawling with these creatures.

This Squidoo lens is about my Experiences with Trains. I've taken trips on trains--from the bullet trains of Japan (the Shinkansen to the commuter trains of the San Francisco Bay Area (BART, CalTrain, ACE Train, VTA Light Rail). I've also owned the model trains that almost everyone has played with at least once in their life. This Squidoo lens has links to books and other resources on trains--including museums, operating rail systems around the world (Orient Express, Trans-Siberian Railroad, the Alaskan Train, and Old-West Style trains). Wind energy in use... sail boats and sailing ships... this is the way that humans have traveled over the rivers, lakes, and oceans for thousands and thousands of years. I've been fascinated by this mode of travel for many, many years. When my dad moved our family to the island of Guam, I had a chance to be on these boats in the open ocean around the island. Truly an interesting experience. This Squidoo lens on sailing ships explains a bit more about this use of alternate energy for transportation propulsion.

Japanese Movies - The Old, Modern, Fun, and Bizarre!

I've always loved Japanese movies -- ever since being introduced to the Godzilla movies on the Saturday afternoon "creepy creature features". This Squidoo lens gives you an idea of the wide variety of Japanese movies out there... the science fiction ones, the old-style ones (sort of similar to American "Westerns"), the police detective mysteries, and the comedies. All are a bunch of fun!

Our family (Mom, Dad, sister, and I) learned about tangentangen when we lived on Guam... Tangentangen grew seemingly everywhere on the island.. and we soon found that it made handy firewood for barbeques. And our yard had a bunch of it lining the sides. Charging Ahead with Solar Electricity!

Yup.... I'm a fan of alternate energy--and that includes all that good stuff we can soak up from the sun! Most "Solar Electricity" is believed to come from photovoltaic cells and panels... but you can also use a solar concentrator/collector to focus the sun's rays onto a heat collector/exchanger that converts some form of liquid into a gas to turn turbines that then generate the electricity. This Squidoo lens explores some of these methods for generating electricity.

Folks who live along the coast usually know about storm surge and tsunami (also called "seismic sea waves" or incorrectly, "tidal waves"). With storm surge, you usually have a few days' notice that the storm will raise coastal water levels... seasonal floods also provide plenty of warning. But with tsunami, you usually don't get much warning (sometimes, none at all--except for the weird and brief pulling out of the water from the coastline--only to bring in hugely massive water height: the tsunami). This Squidoo lens provides some description and suggestions for protecting yourself against these natural and yes, common phenomenon!

A friend from work does this during his spare time... he not only races these things, but he also builds them, repairs, them, and keeps 'em running. It's an interesting hobby.... Submarines... Part of the Underwater Adventure!

Even before we went to Guam, I enjoyed watching the show "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" and movies such as "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau". So it was only natural that I'd have a fascination with Submarines. On Guam, I had a lot of chances to see the big black sails popping up in the ocean beyond the reef near the Main Navy Base.

Later, I had a chance to ride in a submarine in Hawaii with my family when we were on vacation.

One of my first Squidoo lenses was on the monitor lizards I frequently ran into while boonie stomping on Guam--namely, the Micronesian monitor lizard -- Varanus indicus. They are interesting critters... and since they are related to Komodo Dragons--another fascinating remnant of the dinosaur world, I thought it would be cool to share what I've learned about these creatures with others who might be interested.
